WEEZ FREE!

Happy Juneteenth to all my Texas peeps! For those of you who don't know the significance of today, it's "Black Independence Day." In all actuality, the slaves in Galveston, Texas didn't get word that slaves were freed until this day in 1865, thus allowing slave owners to get a nice 3 extra years of service (as*holes). Anyway, to find out a celebration close to you, go here. You can also go to www.juneteenth.com or here for more background info.

I often wonder why were there so many slaves? Slavery was only abolished in the Middle East I think 1969 in or around. I would love to know your thoughts if you have any?

I believe there were so many slaves because the trans-atlantic slave trade dates back to Columbus and the "New World" days. Slaves became a hot commodity allowing farmers to do more, more quickly and efficiently. I would think of it as today's sweatshop...a lot of work for really cheap and horrible conditions. Now, that isn't to say all slave owners were horrendous to their slaves, for we know, for example, Jefferson loved his slaves so much his whole crop of slaves looked white because he mingled just a little to closely with the female slaves.
